Title: Tomato Prices Soaring in India: Causes and Consequences

Introduction:

In recent months, India has witnessed a steep rise in tomato prices, causing significant concern among consumers, traders, and policymakers. The sudden surge in tomato prices has created a ripple effect on various sectors of the economy and adversely impacted households across the country. In this article, we will explore the factors contributing to this price hike, its consequences, and potential solutions to mitigate the situation.

Factors Contributing to the Tomato Price Hike:

Supply and Demand Imbalance: One of the primary reasons for the surge in tomato prices is the mismatch between supply and demand. Unfavorable weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, drought, or extreme temperatures, have affected tomato cultivation in several key producing regions. This led to a reduced supply, unable to meet the ever-growing demand, thereby driving prices up.

Transportation and Storage Issues: The inadequate infrastructure for transporting and storing perishable commodities like tomatoes exacerbates the problem. A significant portion of the produce gets wasted due to inefficient cold storage facilities, improper handling, and delays

India's National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has made history by successfully producing the country's first cloned indigenous Gir female calf. The achievement is a significant milestone in the country's scientific progress and has the potential to revolutionize the dairy industry.

  • On march 16 ,  the female calf named  GANGA   was born but  the achievement was disclosed   after  10 days  after observing  her health.

  • The weight of the calf at the time of birth was 32 kg .
  • We have cloned the calf from a cow of Gir breed which was giving 15-litre milk per day. As per Prime Minister Narendra Modi's directions to increase milk yield, we have started cloning the high-yield cows using the cloning technique," Vice Chancellor of GB Pant Agriculture university Dr Manmohan Singh Chauhan said.

  • The programme was started by National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal in collaboration with Uttarakhand Livestock Development Board (ULDB), Dehradun

  • To clone the Gir, oocytes are isolated from live animals using ultrasound-guided needles, and then, matured for 24 hours under control conditions.

  • The somatic cells of elite cows are used as donor genomes, which are fused with OPU-derived enucleated oocytes. Following chemical activation and in-vitro culture, the developed blastocysts are transferred into recipient mothers to deliver the Gir calf.

IIT MADRAS DEVELOPS POCKET FRIENDLY DEIVICE TO DETECT MILK ADULTERATION

IIT Madras Researchers develop pocket-friendly device to detect milk adulteration in 30 seconds "

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have developed a pocket-friendly device that can detect milk adulteration in just 30 seconds.  a three-dimensional (3D) paper-based portable device that can detect adulteration in milk within 30 seconds. The test could be even performed at home.

  •  Milk adulteration is a widespread problem in India. According to a report by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), nearly 40% of the milk in the country is adulterated. Adulterants such as water, starch, urea, and detergent are added to milk to increase its quantity and make it more profitable. These adulterants can be harmful to human health and can cause a range of health problems, including food poisoning, kidney damage, and even cancer.                                                                                                                                                                It can detect multiple substances commonly used as adulterating agents including Urea, detergents, soap, starch, hydrogen peroxide, sodium-hydrogen-carbonate and salt, among others.
  •  Unlike conventional laboratory-based methods to test the purity of milk, which are both expensive and time-consuming, this new technology is affordable and could also be used to test other liquids such as water, fresh juices, and milkshakes for traces of adulteration. Only a millilitre of any liquid would be as a sample to test for adulterants.

  • Elaborating on the functioning of this paper-based device, Dr. Pallab Sinha Mahapatra, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, said, "The 3D paper-based microfluidic device is made up of a top and bottom cover and a sandwich structure middle layer.

  • This 3D design works well for transporting   denser liquids at a consistent speed. The paper is treated with reagents and is let to dry. Both paper layers are adhered to both  sides of the support after drying, and the covers adhere with double-sided tape. Whatman filter paper grade 4 is used in this  design, which aids liquid flow and allows for the storage of more    reagents."

  •  Dr. Pallab Sinha Mahapatra added, "All the reagents are dissolved either in distilled water or in ethanol, depending upon their solubility. Using colorimetric detection techniques, all the adulterants are detected in different liquid samples. It is inferred from the investigation that the reagent only reacts with the specific adulterant in this method and not with any milk ingredients. Hence, this analytical tool can help to monitor liquid food safety and thereby increases the traceability of tainted milk in remote areas of developing countries."
Milk is one of the most vital foods important to lead a healthy lifestyle and yet is    the most adulterated food item in the world.
  • The adulteration of milk is a growing menace, especially in developing countries like India, Pakistan, China, and Brazil. Consumption of adulterated milk could cause medical complications such as kidney problems, infant death, gastrointestinal complications, Diarrhoea, and even cancer.

COATED UREA :: THE NEW AGE FERTILIZER

COATED  UREA - THE NEW  AGE  FERTILIER

Rising  world population  is expected to increase the demand for nitrogen fertilizers to improve crop yield to be able to feed the rising population and ensure food security, with the current challenges nutrient use efficiency of urea and its pressing environmental concerns, controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) can become a solution to overcome all these challenges by controlling the rate of release of fertilizer by providing a coating around it .

However, there are certain obstacles in the widespread application of CRFs in agriculture. This article aims to provide a better overview of the development regarding CRFs and different raw materials utilized to form CRF  and also to provide and insight for future works in the field of agriculture.

     INTRODUCTION  --

  • Nitrogen is the most crucial and essential plant nutrient, and to supply this essential nutrient urea has been used since ages making it the most commonly used nitrogen-based fertilizer, it also has a high nitrogen content (46%) and low cost.
  • However, it is prone to loss due to poor absorbance by plants which leads to economic decline and severe environmental concerns such as NITRATE leaching, groundwater contamination, soil acidification, heavy metal contamination and eutrophication of freshwater bodies.
  • Urea was reported to have nutrient utilization efficiency of only about 30%, where major losses occur through volatilization, some portion react with organic compound in the soil and rest is lost through leaching into water system.
  • With these challenges and environmental concerns CRFs have become solution in this day and age by formulating them to release nutrient according to requirement of plants.

What are controlled release fertilizers?

  • A controlled release fertilizer is a coated or granulated that releases nutrient gradually into the soil, they are also made available to the target at the desired rate and concentration level.
  • it can sustain the nutrient in the soil for a longer period which helps to improve nutrient use efficiency (NUE) by less frequent dosing. It can also efficiently reduce environmental hazards by decreasing nutrient removal rate from the soil by rain or irrigation.
  • It can decrease the fertilizer application rate by 20-30%. It provides  economic advantage in terms of saving labor, time and energy.

👅Types of coating material on urea fertilizers have classified broadly into two categories- organic and inorganic; among organic fertilizers there are two types of polymers which are used as coating materials which are synthetic polymers which include polyurethane, polyethylene, alkyd resin, polyphenol, polyvinyl alcohol and natural polymers which include starch, cellulose, biochar and among inorganic polymers, the coating materials include bentonite, Sulphur based coating materials, gypsum and zinc

Inorganic material based coatings ----

Minerals such as hydroxyapatite, bentonite, zeolite and attapulgite were explored as they can act as soil conditioners and improve the physical and chemical and chemical properties of the soil as well as ion-exchange properties that favor plant growth

Organic material based coating -----

                                     1. Synthetic polymer-based coating.

                                         2. Natural polymer-based coating.

click here to join agriwarrior discussion group

STRUGGLE LIFE OF AN AGRICULTURE ASPIRANT

STRUGGLE  STARTS  FROM  COLLGE  LIFE  :

Most of the  students  during  admission  are  not  aware  about why taking admission in  agriculture colleges  in UG  . they are not  able  to understand what  is the real motto of  studying  agriculture  and its opportunities after  graduation  as there is no  awareness in schools about  agriculture courses  after 12th  class

More than 50 percent  students  take admission in agriculture  courses  as  2nd option  after  not qualifying   NEET or  other medical  exams , as a result they take  admission unwillingly  with no  real interest

Due to lack of infrastructure  and facilities  students are  taught  only to complete  the syllabus  for 4  years  and are not focused on improving their skills  and  capability to   understand real problems  in agriculture  and solution   which ultimately  leads to  face unemployment  prover oblems  in future . Students are not made aware about  the  wide scope  and different opportunities  in agriculture sector  and  it becomes too late  for self realization  in taking  right decision in career .

Students spend  their  precious time  as 4 years  in  graduation  but do not learn real  value of agriculture and sometimes doubt themselves  whether  4 year degree is useful for them or not  ??

REAL STRUGGLE BEGINS  .....Now

As  in agriculture  day by day  inputs  are increasing  and productivity and efficiency  is decreasing  ,, this   more suits to  agriculture students  also  .one day agriculture students will not  get  space to even  stand on   earth  as more number of  agriculture colleges are increasing   but jobs are decreasing .
Now  there is a huge competition  among agriculture aspirants  for government and private  jobs  and also  taking  up business startups  they  need much amount of money  .   Main concern or worry is that  still  we have sufficient  knowledge  of  agriculture but we  do not  want  to do farming  and  running  for private  or govt jobs . why this is happening  ???  govt  should

Aspirants  prepare for govt jobs  which are uncertain  and do not guarantee  for success , though there is still hope for getting  jobs  .even if anyone gets got . job    our   selection process and system is slow and  weak  which makes aspirant  demotivated  . There is no value of agriculture   aspirant  until  they reach a higher post  level  .  so we need to change the  mindset of  aspirants and provide proper guidance regarding  different  career opportunities  in  agriculture  sector

Despite  70-80 percent   population is dependent   on agriculture  ,aspirants do not settled  with  sufficient  jobs  due to lack  of infrastructures  development
